Converse Student Achieves Milestone As Spartanburg’s First Re:Degree Graduate

This August, Converse University achieved a new milestone: recognizing student Kimberly Anderson as the first graduate from OneSpartanburg Inc.’s Re: Degree Initiative. This is a testament to the University’s unwavering commitment to empowering students with the confidence to pursue their goals boldly.
OneSpartanburg Inc.’s Re:Degree program is part of Movement 2030, a strategic plan for Spartanburg County to advance economic mobility and educational attainment. The program supports the re-enrollment and degree completion of the nearly 51,000 adults across Spartanburg County. It aids local citizens with little college experience, no matter the degree level, but who did not graduate. The program offers flexible scheduling, personalized academic advising, and financial aid options to ensure that every student can achieve their educational goals.

Like many, Kimberly’s educational journey had its twists and turns. She started years ago, but life took her on a different path. “Growing up on the east side of Spartanburg, Converse University has always been a staple,” Kimberly shared. “I’ve had relatives and friends attend Converse. It’s always been known for its education programs. A few years ago, when I decided to pursue Early Childhood Education, Converse was my only choice due to its reputation and location. I excelled in my courses, got to the second benchmark, and had to take the Core Praxis. Reading and writing was a breeze, but math stopped my dream.”
“Dr Suzanne Gunter, Converse’s Chair of the Department of Art, Design, & Letters, recommended that I complete my degree in Studio Art because I had a good art background. The plan was to begin teaching and go through PACE to get certified, but life happened, and being a single mom with my daughters Katelyn and Emma.”
Kimberly had had to complete one last course but had taken a pause from her education at Converse. During a meeting for paraprofessionals at the Spartanburg School District 7, she learned about the Re:Degree Program. “Once I called,” Kimberly said, “I connected with Erin Smith; she’s amazing! I completed and passed AST in June and am now a Converse graduate!”
Currently a paraprofessional in the special education department at Jesse Boyd Elementary School, Kimberly is determined to continue her education at Converse with a master’s degree and become a fully accredited art teacher while balancing her roles as a mother, professional, and student.

Smith, OneSpartanburg, Inc.’s Director of Adult Degree Reengagement. “She will be successful because she has the drive and a clear vision for her future. We were lucky to have her as a Re: Degree student and very fortunate to support her on this journey.”

OneSpartanburg Inc.’s Re: Degree program, as part of Movement 2030, is supported by a collaboration of organizations, including OneSpartanburg Inc., Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM), Spartanburg District 7, and many more.
“Kimberly has shown persistence and perseverance in working on her BA in Studio Art while staying actively engaged as a mom of two,” stated Mary Carlisle, Converse Associate Professor of Art. “In addition to attending events at their schools, Kimberly also brought her daughters to events at Converse — serving as a role model for what it means to be a college student. Kimberly supported and encouraged her peers in the art program and continues to stay engaged with them on social media. As her advisor, I am proud of her accomplishment in completing her degree and look forward to her continued engagement as an alumna.”
On Friday, August 9, 2024, a reception honoring Kimberly’s milestone took place at Converse University, with her daughters, family, friends, and mentors in attendance. The event highlighted the unwavering support and love that surrounded Kimberly throughout her journey, making it a heartwarming celebration of her achievement.
